One of the reasons that I sell real estate is a sincere love of beautiful houses, and nothing is closer to my heart than the charm, personality and quality of an older home. In the historical area of Ft. Myers we have wonderful older homes, some which have been lovingly restored and some still in need of TLC from new owners with appreciation for their style.

Spanish Architecture influenced home-design in the 1920’s, resulting in some beautiful old stucco houses with their porches and rounded arches. Most have terracotta barrel tile roofs and wooden loggia over tiled or brick patios.
We also have Arts and Crafts Bungalows with their attention to detail spilling out onto the wide porches. Stained glass windows, intricate woodwork, hardwood floors and general, often one-of-a-kind, high-quality detailing are the hallmarks of these homes. Nothing was mass produced.

Last, but certainly not least are the Old Florida Bungalows or “Cracker Houses”. These were simple in design and very functional. The wooden frame construction was built from the old heart pine that was plentiful in the early part of the 20th century but is no longer available. Features of these houses include high ceilings with ceiling fans to keep the rooms cool in the heat of summer, good cross-ventilation and wide, generous porches for sitting-and even sleeping on- to catch whatever breeze there was, in the days before air conditioning.

These houses were built in various sizes, but whatever their size, their adaptations to the style of their era and the demands of the locale combine to give charm that is unique. Allow me to introduce you these interesting and storied homes.
